How you become a Chaser

The October beginner guides describe the first Chaser as randomly chosen. Converted Runners add to that side as the match progresses. Video creators also use Catcher for the pursuing role.

Your goal is to convert the remaining Runners. The field becomes a different pursuit problem as teammates are added: several Chasers can pressure routes that a single pursuer could not cover at once. Being assigned Chaser does not require buying a knife pass.

Intercept instead of following

Start where a Runner’s route can bring them into reach. Chrisu describes a goalkeeper-like position: let the Runner approach, watch the direction change, then react. Constantly following their previous turn from behind gives them control of the path.

Shano Bangz’s pursuit discussion focuses on aiming ahead of the moving player. Momentum means the target is unlikely to remain at the exact point where you first saw them. Read where they are heading rather than treating the visible position as a stationary target.

When a Runner dodges, reassess their exit. Chrisu recommends provoking their dash before committing yours. That is a decision sequence, not a guarantee: wait for a readable change, close the new route, and stop following the route they have already abandoned.

Give each tool a job

Tool Documented job Limit that matters
Rufus’s Leash Throws forward and pulls a Runner toward you Its stated pull distance is not the base knife hitbox.
Big Dagger Temporarily increases reach for the next melee hit The early guide gives a five-second window; it is an ability, not every dagger skin.
Rocket Shoes Directional burst from a standstill Different from the ordinary movement drill.
Banana Peel Trips a player on contact A consumable, bought separately from permanent abilities.
Bear Trap Later recording describes a short hold The recording’s availability and timing do not establish a price for every account.

Read the Chaser ability reference before choosing an unlock. For a paid item, check the pass record; a weapon’s name cannot establish a reach increase.

Know what counts as a catch

The guides describe a knife hit downing a Runner, with the later team change making the Chaser side stronger. They also describe a revive before conversion. A swing animation or a moment of visual overlap is not a confirmed catch: read the downed state, team change and match result.

If a Runner is still active, continue the pursuit rather than assuming the apparent contact has already converted them. Some tools change that interaction. Cloak obscures a Runner without making them unhittable; Default’s 9 October recording describes a One Hit Shield that blocks the next hit during its brief raised window, then breaks.

When a Runner has passed your position, turn to their next route instead of chasing the last location you saw. The useful endpoint is the game registering the catch or the round ending with no Runners remaining. It is not a claim that one technique wins every match.

Progress is a separate question

The XP page records what authors report about catches and level gains. Those reported values are dated observations, not a reason to equate a purchase, a swing and an XP award.
